Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in an entertaining London derby, with captain Martin Ødegaard scoring the decisive goal to maintain the Gunners’ strong start to the Premier League season.
Chelsea stunned the home crowd by taking the lead in the second minute through summer signing Morgan Rogers, whose £117 million move was underlined by a composed volley after Arsenal failed to clear Reece James’ free-kick.
The goal was the first Arsenal had conceded in the Premier League this season.
Despite their early advantage, Chelsea were unable to contain sustained pressure from Mikel Arteta’s side. The Blues had failed to keep a clean sheet in their previous 18 Premier League matches and were repeatedly forced into last-ditch defending.
Emiliano Martínez denied Bukayo Saka with a crucial save, while Jorrel Hato and Wesley Fofana produced important blocks as Arsenal searched for an equaliser.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 25th minute when former Chelsea forward Kai Havertz beat Martínez at his near post with a well-placed finish to bring Arsenal level.
The match continued at a high intensity, with both sides creating opportunities in a contest involving two teams that had invested heavily in their squads during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea came close to regaining the lead after captain James forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into a save from distance.
Pedro Neto then went even closer after a brilliant solo run, only to see his effort strike the post.
Arsenal responded decisively, taking the lead in the 50th minute through Ødegaard.
The Arsenal captain found the net after Havertz cleverly allowed the ball to run across him, creating space for the Norwegian midfielder to beat Martínez and put the Gunners ahead.
It was Ødegaard’s second goal in his last three Premier League appearances.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages and substitute Estêvão appeared to have found a way through, but Raya produced an outstanding fingertip save to preserve Arsenal’s advantage.
The defeat extended Chelsea’s difficult run at the Emirates Stadium, with the Blues suffering their fifth consecutive Premier League loss at Arsenal’s home ground.
Arsenal held on for all three points after an absorbing derby that showcased the attacking quality and competitive intensity between the two London rivals.
