Armed Attack on University Campus Leaves Students Injured and Sparks Security Concerns

More than a dozen armed robbers invaded the Ibogun Campus of Olabisi Onabanjo University in Ogun State in a terrifying midnight raid, shooting sporadically across multiple student hostels, injuring several students, and making off with mobile phones, laptops, and other valuables in a prolonged attack that left the campus community traumatized and demanding urgent security intervention.

The attack began around midnight and continued into the early hours, with a group of over 12 gunmen systematically moving through hostels on the campus located near Ifo, operating for several hours without encountering meaningful resistance. Students were caught sleeping and scrambled for safety as gunshots rang out steadily across the campus environment, with some sustaining injuries while attempting to escape or resist the attackers.

Eyewitness accounts circulated on social media, with a student identified as Michael Mabayomije Jinadu describing the chaos of the night in graphic terms. What appeared to be blood stains were visible on the walls and floors of at least one hostel targeted by the attackers, underscoring the violence with which the raid was conducted.

Ibogun residents described the night as chaotic and deeply traumatizing, with the scale and duration of the attack raising serious questions about the adequacy of security arrangements at the campus and the response time of law enforcement to a prolonged violent incident affecting hundreds of students.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the command had launched an investigation into the attack. He said the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibogun Police Division and the Area Commander had both moved to the scene to assess the situation and reassure students and residents that law enforcement was committed to identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
