Abuja – The Allied People’s Movement (APM) has criticised what it described as the Presidency’s attack on the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, over his comments on Nigeria’s worsening economic situation and insecurity.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the opposition party said the alleged response to the cleric’s remarks reflected intolerance toward constructive criticism and a reluctance to address the challenges confronting Nigerians.
The APM said religious leaders play a vital role in society by engaging with citizens and understanding the realities faced by communities, stressing that their views should be respected rather than dismissed.
According to the party, Cardinal Onaiyekan’s comments reflected the concerns of millions of Nigerians grappling with rising insecurity and economic hardship.
The party accused the Federal Government of focusing on critics instead of addressing pressing national issues, arguing that democratic governance requires openness to dialogue, accountability and respect for freedom of expression.
The APM further stated that Nigerians are seeking practical solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges rather than explanations or excuses. It urged the Tinubu administration to prioritise policies aimed at reducing hardship, restoring public confidence and improving citizens’ welfare.
The party also called on the government to engage constructively with religious and community leaders, describing them as important stakeholders whose contributions could support national development.
The Presidency has yet to respond to the APM’s latest statement.
