APC Waives Screening Requirement for Tinubu Ahead of Primaries

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a waiver exempting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from undergoing screening ahead of the party’s forthcoming primary elections.

The decision was reached at the NWC’s 188th meeting held on May 6, 2026, where the committee resolved to deem the president as duly screened in line with the party’s constitution.

According to a statement signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the waiver was granted pursuant to Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv) of the party’s constitution, which empowers the NWC to organise and supervise primaries and grant waivers under special circumstances.

The committee noted that Tinubu, as the incumbent president and leader of the party, had already undergone screening ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, making a fresh appearance before a screening panel unnecessary.

It also cited what it described as overwhelming endorsements and votes of confidence received by the president from key party stakeholders, including the Progressive Governors Forum, members of the National Assembly, and other party organs during the APC National Summit held in May 2025 and subsequent events.

The APC stated that the decision was taken in the best interest of the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
