The American Business Council has announced a year long Freedom 250 Programme to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States and strengthen economic, cultural and educational relations between the United States and Nigeria.

The programme, unveiled in Lagos, will feature four major events across Nigeria in 2026 and bring together government officials, diplomats, business leaders, young people, creatives and development partners.

According to the Council, the initiative is designed to reinforce the longstanding partnership between both countries while promoting dialogue, innovation, leadership and private sector collaboration.

The first event, Red, White and Blue Arts and Culture Night, is scheduled for Lagos in August. It will feature live music, art exhibitions and creative performances celebrating the cultural links between Nigeria and the United States.

An Economic and Policy Forum will follow on October 26 in Abuja on the sidelines of the 32nd Nigerian Economic Summit. The forum is expected to convene policymakers, business executives and development partners to discuss trade, investment, innovation and policy cooperation.

The Council will also organise a CEO mentorship series in secondary schools in Lagos during the third and fourth quarters of 2026. The initiative will connect chief executives from member companies with students for guidance on leadership, entrepreneurship, career development and youth empowerment.

The programme will end with a grand celebration involving representatives from government, diplomacy, business, academia and civil society.

ABC Chief Executive Officer Margaret Olele said the anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the enduring United States Nigeria partnership and to shape the next chapter of cooperation through stronger trade, private sector engagement and mutual growth.
