Africa’s First Fully Digital Bank Marks Nine Years of Transforming Nigerian Banking

Wema Bank Plc is celebrating the ninth anniversary of ALAT by Wema, which launched in 2017 as Africa’s first fully digital bank and has since grown from a pioneering response to traditional banking’s limitations into a comprehensive financial ecosystem serving millions of Nigerians across every tier of the economy.

When ALAT was introduced, its founding premise was straightforward but radical for its time: banking should be entirely digital, instantly accessible, and free from the physical constraints of branch visits, long queues, and paper-intensive processes. Nine years later, the platform has evolved far beyond that original proposition into an ecosystem encompassing structured savings tools, seamless payments, business services, and a growing suite of features designed for a financially aware generation of users.

To mark the milestone, Wema Bank has launched the ALAT at 9 campaign, a month-long series of customer-focused activities, rewards, and interactive experiences running from May 2 to May 31, 2026, designed to celebrate the platform’s loyal user base while deepening engagement with its expanding range of features.

Key anniversary activations include ALAT Wrapped, a personalized visual summary of each customer’s journey on the platform that can be downloaded and shared across social media. The 9 Features in 9 Days experience challenges customers to engage with a designated feature each day over nine days, with completion of all nine tasks unlocking rewards. Customers who complete their ninth transaction at exactly 9:00 a.m. or 9:00 p.m. will receive instant rewards, while the ALAT Evolution Jingle Challenge invites users to compose and submit a second verse for the platform’s signature jingle to win prizes.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, described the anniversary campaign as both a celebration of the platform’s journey and a statement of its future direction. “ALAT at 9 is not just a celebration of time. It is a reflection of how far we have come and a clear indication of where we are going. Over the years, we have continued to evolve with our customers, building a platform that is not only functional but also engaging and rewarding,” he said.

Chief Digital Officer Olusegun Adeniyi said the campaign was designed to merge routine banking with meaningful and rewarding engagement, combining personalized insights, gamified missions, and tangible rewards into a platform experience that responded to users in a more dynamic and intuitive way. Existing customers can access the anniversary experience by updating the ALAT app, while new customers can download the application and begin accessing its full range of features and anniversary benefits within minutes.
