Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has welcomed a call for peace by All Progressives Congress governorship candidate Bola Oyebamiji following the conclusion of the August 15 governorship election.
Oyebamiji had urged his supporters and party members to remain calm while the APC reviewed the outcome of the poll.
He said he respected the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission but would await the party’s final position after its assessment.
Adeleke described the peace message as a constructive development after a tense campaign period.
The governor said Osun residents had experienced weeks of political anxiety and incidents of violence before the election and argued that the state needed reconciliation rather than further confrontation.
Adeleke said his own supporters had been instructed not to attack opposition members and rejected suggestions that violence should be used as a political tool.
He said the election had ended and called on political leaders to focus on governance and development.
The governor invited former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Oyebamiji and other opposition figures to work with his administration on issues affecting the state.
Adeleke said all political tendencies remained stakeholders in the future of Osun.
The governor had also met President Bola Tinubu after the election.
His latest comments signal an effort to lower political tension while the APC continues reviewing the result and considering its next steps. The post election environment will depend partly on whether political parties and supporters maintain the peace appeals issued by their leaders
