Adeleke Approves University Staff Payments, Signals Push for Creative Economy Growth

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has approved the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government at the Osun State University, with payment of all accrued arrears to commence from January 2026, in a move widely described within academic circles as a decisive demonstration of responsive governance and genuine commitment to staff welfare.

The implementation covers the Consolidated Academic Allowance, the newly introduced tax-free Consolidated Tools Allowance, and Professorial Allowances, provisions expected to significantly enhance staff welfare, strengthen institutional stability, and promote industrial harmony at the university.

ASUU Osun State University Chapter Chairman Dr. Wende Olaosebikan described the approval as both timely and transformative, expressing appreciation on behalf of academic staff for what he called a life-impacting decision that reflected the governor’s leadership quality and his genuine understanding of the importance of workers’ welfare to institutional effectiveness.

The Ibadan Zone of ASUU described the development as a triumph of dialogue and justice in university labour relations, underscoring the importance of sustained and respectful engagement between government and labour unions as the most productive alternative to industrial conflict.

In a separate development, Governor Adeleke praised achievements in the agricultural sector during his administration’s third year, revealing that the cocoa expansion initiative had achieved the planting of 400,000 cocoa seedlings since 2023, with progress he said was putting Osun on course to reclaim its frontline position among Nigerian cocoa-producing states ahead of Ondo and Cross River.

The governor also declared his ambition to position Osun State as a hub of the global creative industry, which he described as a two trillion dollar economy, following the success of a major concert organised by his son in Osogbo. He announced plans to institutionalise an annual concert of expanding scale in the state, arguing that the entertainment sector represented a significant economic opportunity for youth employment, local commerce stimulation, and the projection of Osun’s cultural brand nationally and internationally.
