ADC Says Tinubu’s 30% Approval Rating Reflects Public Dissatisfaction

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has said a recent public opinion survey showing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with a 30 per cent approval rating reflects growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians over economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges.

In a statement issued by the party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC described the findings of a survey conducted by Eagle Badger Data Analytics (EBDA) as a “devastating verdict” on the administration’s performance after three years in office.

According to the survey cited by the opposition party, 30.2 per cent of respondents approved of the President’s performance, while 47.5 per cent expressed disapproval. The report also indicated that a majority of Nigerians believe their living conditions have worsened since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

The ADC argued that the figures suggest that nearly seven out of every 10 Nigerians are either dissatisfied with or unconvinced by the direction of the country under the current administration.

The party highlighted survey findings indicating that 62 per cent of respondents said they were worse off than they were three years ago, while only 23.3 per cent reported improvements in their living conditions. It also noted that 42.4 per cent of those surveyed described themselves as “much worse off.”

Abdullahi said the findings reflected the realities faced by many Nigerians, including rising food prices, transportation costs, unemployment, and the struggles of small businesses.

He further pointed to survey data indicating that food prices have risen by more than 90 per cent since May 2023, while overall consumer prices have increased by about 80 per cent.

“The government continues to celebrate macroeconomic statistics, but Nigerians do not eat statistics. They buy food, pay rent, settle school fees, and deal with rising transport costs,” the statement said.

On security, the ADC said the survey also identified insecurity as a major concern among citizens, citing persistent attacks by bandits, kidnappers, terrorists, and other criminal groups in various parts of the country.

The party maintained that after three years in office, responsibility for addressing the nation’s challenges rests with the Tinubu administration and should no longer be attributed solely to inherited problems.

The ADC called for leadership focused on job creation, improved security, and tangible improvements in citizens’ welfare, arguing that the survey should serve as a warning signal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Presidency had not issued an immediate response to the ADC’s comments at the time of filing this report.
