ADC Demands Arrest of Kuje Chairman over Alleged Threat to Opposition Voters

The African Democratic Congress has called for the arrest of Kuje Area Council Chairman Samuel Shekwolo over a reported statement that residents should support the All Progressives Congress or leave the area.

The ADC said the alleged remark amounted to political intimidation and a threat to citizens’ constitutional rights.

The statement attributed to Shekwolo was reported by the opposition party and was not independently established in the source material.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said elected officials had a duty to protect residents regardless of political affiliation.

He called on the Inspector General of Police and Department of State Services to investigate and, where appropriate, prosecute any conduct that violated the law.

The party also asked President Bola Tinubu to clarify an earlier comment that all was fair in politics.

ADC argued that political rhetoric should not be interpreted as permission for intimidation.

The party also called on the National Peace Committee to respond early to potentially inflammatory statements ahead of the 2027 elections.

ActionAid Nigeria separately expressed concern about the reported Kuje comment.

Country Director Andrew Mamedu said public office should not be used to pressure citizens into supporting a political party.

ActionAid warned that normalizing intimidation could weaken political freedoms before the general election.

The organization said elected officials should serve all residents, including people who supported opposition parties or no party.

The controversy increases pressure on security and electoral institutions to respond consistently to potentially threatening political speech.

Any legal determination would depend on establishing exactly what was said and whether it constituted an offense under Nigerian law.
