CAN Raises Concerns Over Conviction of Christian Woman in Borno, Awaits Appeal Outcome

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of Lami Samuel Dawa by the Borno State High Court for her alleged involvement in the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity.

In a statement issued by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said it is aware that an appeal has already been filed against the judgment delivered by Justice A. B. Kumdila of the Borno State High Court.

Okoh stated that while the appeal process is ongoing, CAN remains committed to respecting the judicial system and allowing the legal process to run its course.

However, the Christian body noted that the case has raised significant questions regarding the protection of religious freedom and the enforcement of fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the statement, CAN maintains that every individual has the right to freely choose, change, and practise a religion or belief without fear of coercion, intimidation, or unlawful punishment.

The association emphasized the importance of safeguarding constitutional freedoms and called on relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties involved are protected throughout the legal process.

CAN further urged that justice be administered in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the rule of law, expressing confidence that the courts will give due consideration to the issues raised on appeal.

The case has continued to generate public interest, particularly among religious and human rights groups, as observers await the outcome of the appellate proceedings.
