Wike Explains Why He Did Not Seek Senate Seat After Rivers Governorship

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has said he chose not to seek a Senate seat after serving two terms as Rivers State governor because he wanted to retain what he described as the freedom to speak openly on national issues.

Wike made the remarks during the inauguration of a pedestrian bridge built by Dunamis International Gospel Centre in Abuja. He criticized the assumption that former governors should automatically pursue legislative office and said public service should be judged by practical achievements.

The minister commended the church’s senior pastor, Dr Paul Enenche, and his wife, Becky, for supporting an infrastructure project intended to benefit the wider community. He urged public officials, private organizations and religious institutions to invest in initiatives that improve people’s daily lives.

Wike also called for assessments of leaders to focus on verifiable delivery rather than political labels or social media claims. His explanation reflects his stated personal reasoning for the career decision.
