INEC Says 66 Candidate Petitions Succeeded after Review of 2027 Election Lists

The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the outcome of a review of complaints concerning its published lists of candidates for the 2027 governorship and state assembly elections.

According to a statement attributed to National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna, the commission received petitions alleging omitted parties, the inclusion of candidates absent from party membership registers and multiple nominations.

The commission said it examined the complaints against relevant records and legal requirements, approving some requests while rejecting others for lack of merit.

For governorship contests, INEC reported receiving 69 petitions from 12 political parties across 26 states. It said 41 petitions succeeded and 28 were rejected.

For state Houses of Assembly contests, the commission reported 61 petitions from 11 parties across 11 states, with 25 successful and 36 unsuccessful.

Taken together, the figures amount to 66 successful petitions. The number of successful petitions should not automatically be treated as the number of individual candidates reinstated without consulting the detailed revised list.

INEC also said some previously published names were removed after verification showed that the individuals were not on the relevant party registers or did not meet nomination requirements.

The commission indicated that updated lists would be made available on its website and reiterated its commitment to transparency.

The precise election timetable, official statement and updated candidate lists should be checked directly with INEC before publication.
