Election Data Coalition Plans 4,000 Observers and AI Checks for 2027 Polls

Five civil society organizations have launched a joint initiative to monitor Nigeria’s 2027 general elections using more than 4,000 observers and technology designed to detect possible discrepancies in published results. The Nigeria Election Data Observatory consortium brings together Dataphyte Foundation, Yiaga Africa, BudgIT Foundation, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development and DEAN Initiative.

The partners plan to combine field reports, media verification and electoral data on a shared platform. Artificial intelligence-assisted optical character recognition would extract figures from result sheets published on INEC’s Result Viewing Portal, allowing analysts to compare totals and flag inconsistencies for human review.

Dataphyte Foundation’s Oluseyi Olufemi said the project seeks to reduce fragmentation in civic monitoring and improve the quality of evidence available to journalists and election observers. The consortium also introduced an application for field reporting and plans to publish readiness assessments, situation updates and a post-election review.

Organizers cited a September 2026 survey suggesting limited public confidence in the electoral commission. They acknowledged that automated systems require safeguards against errors, manipulation and misleading interpretations. The initiative could provide useful independent scrutiny, but flagged discrepancies would still need verification before being treated as evidence of wrongdoing.
