Akpabio Says 30 States Have Backed Constitutional Changes for State Police

Senate President Godswill Akpabio says about 30 state Houses of Assembly have endorsed proposed constitutional amendments that would permit the establishment of state police, raising expectations that Nigeria could move towards a decentralized security structure. He made the disclosure in Abuja while receiving members of the Arewa Revival Project, a youth organization drawn from the 19 northern states.

Akpabio argued that policing organized closer to communities could improve the response to insecurity and complement existing federal security institutions. He suggested that the constitutional process was nearing completion, although the precise status of the state resolutions and the remaining legislative steps were not detailed in the remarks supplied.

The Senate President also urged the visiting youths to campaign for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, saying the administration required more time for its economic and security reforms to yield results. He cited tax reforms and efforts to diversify the economy as evidence of progress, while accusing some online critics of being paid to attack the government. That allegation was not accompanied by evidence in the account.

Arewa Revival Project coordinator Mustafa Ibrahim praised Akpabio’s leadership and presented him with an award. The meeting combined discussion of a potentially significant security reform with an explicit appeal for political mobilization ahead of the next general election.
