Court Jails Former Banker 39 Years Over N2.7bn Fraud

A Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has sentenced former banker Christopher Jackson Edeh to a total of 39 years imprisonment for his involvement in a N2.7 billion fraud.

Justice O.O. Abike-Fadipe delivered the judgment on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, following the successful prosecution of the case by the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Edeh was arraigned on February 28, 2024, on a nine-count charge bordering on fraudulent accounting and unauthorized access to a computer system.

According to the charges, the former banker unlawfully altered the account details of several customers and public institutions, including the Kano State Government Power Intervention Fund, NNPC Trading Limited, Stallion Vision Limited, the Lagos State Government Blue Line Project, the State Contributory Pension Account, and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, with the intent to defraud.

During the trial, prosecution counsel Z.B. Atiku called three witnesses and presented documentary evidence to support the allegations. The defence, however, called one witness in Edeh’s defence.

In her ruling, Justice Abike-Fadipe held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently found the defendant guilty on all nine counts.

The court sentenced Edeh to five years imprisonment without an option of fine on each of counts one to seven relating to fraudulent false accounting. He was further sentenced to two years imprisonment each on counts eight and nine for unauthorized access to a computer system with intent to facilitate criminal activities.

The judge ordered that all the sentences run concurrently.

The conviction marks another significant milestone in the EFCC’s efforts to combat financial crimes and safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s banking system.
