A heavy security presence around Abuja City Gate and Unity Fountain disrupted a planned political march by supporters of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, according to organisers of the event.
The rally, described by organisers as a mega march for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential ticket, was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at the City Gate. Personnel and vehicles associated with several security agencies were reported in the area, limiting access to the intended gathering points.
One of the mobilizers, Saint Samson, told journalists that participants encountered security personnel at Unity Fountain and were prevented from assembling there. He said the organisers had decided to regroup at another location.
Samson maintained that the event was intended as a peaceful campaign activity rather than a protest against the government. “We don’t want any casualties,” he said, adding that supporters were not seeking confrontation.
The account provided does not establish whether any formal prohibition order had been issued, or the security agencies’ reasons for restricting access. Their response was not included in the information available to Xposure News.
The incident raises questions about how security arrangements and the constitutional rights of peaceful political assembly will be balanced as electioneering intensifies ahead of 2027.
