The Senate has moved to investigate allegations of irregular governance arrangements in Nigerian universities while considering legislation to strengthen regulatory oversight and establish a dedicated national research fund.
During consideration of a bill to reform the National Universities Commission, Senator Victor Umeh raised concerns about the management structure of Tansian University in Anambra State, alleging that executive directors had exercised powers inconsistent with established university governance requirements. The claims have not been determined by the Senate investigation, and the institution’s response was not included in the supplied account.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio called for an inquiry into the university and any other institutions found to have adopted arrangements that may conflict with applicable laws. The NUC reform bill, sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, was referred to the relevant committee for further scrutiny.
Lawmakers also advanced a proposal to establish a National Research and Innovation Development Fund. The bill envisages annual financing equivalent to 20 per cent of the Nigerian Content Development Fund, alongside appropriations, grants, investment returns and proceeds from commercialized research. Proposed spending would cover grants, research facilities, intellectual property protection and technology transfer.
In a separate resolution, the chamber called for urgent intervention in Aiyetoro, a coastal community in Ondo State threatened by Atlantic Ocean surges. Senators cited reports of extensive destruction of homes and public facilities and demanded coordinated shoreline protection, emergency assistance and a review of relevant contracts. The Senate asked the responsible committees to monitor implementation and report back within four weeks. All three matters remain at the investigation, legislative or implementation stage rather than representing completed reforms
