The National Leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has died at the age of 100, according to the Ondo State Government.
Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, announced the passing in a personal statement issued on Monday, October 20, describing Fasoranti as a revered leader whose life was dedicated to public service, justice and the advancement of Ondo State, the Yoruba nation and Nigeria.
Aiyedatiwa said the elder statesman’s wisdom, guidance and unwavering commitment to good governance would remain a lasting legacy. He extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the Akure Kingdom and the people of Ondo State.
Born on May 11, 1926 in Akure, Pa Fasoranti was one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen and a consistent advocate of true federalism, restructuring and democratic governance. He served as Commissioner for Finance in Ondo State under Chief Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983 during the Second Republic.
Following the death of Pa Abraham Adesanya, he emerged as the leader of Afenifere and led the organisation as a prominent voice in national discourse, championing constitutional reforms and greater devolution of powers.
His family was touched by national tragedy in 2019 with the killing of his daughter, Mrs. Funke Olakunrin.
If confirmed, his passing marks the end of an era for Afenifere and the Yoruba progressive movement. Tributes are expected from across the country.
