Opposition Coalition Came Too Late, Tinubu Poised for Re-election, Says Senator Plang

Senator Diket Plang, representing Plateau Central Senatorial District, has dismissed concerns over the growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, stating that President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remain firmly on course for re-election.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital, Plang argued that opposition efforts to unite against the APC had come too late, insisting that the ruling party had already consolidated its structures and strengthened its political influence nationwide.

According to the senator, the APC has expanded its reach through strategic alliances and effective grassroots mobilisation, placing it in a strong position ahead of the next electoral cycle.

“The coalition came deeply late because opinions, positions, strategies, inclusiveness and APC’s ability to dominate have already been consolidated,” Plang said.

He expressed confidence that the APC would emerge victorious across key elective offices in 2027, including the presidency, governorships, National Assembly seats and state legislative positions.

“I am very sure that APC will get the majority support of this nation. Other parties may win some positions, but they will not win the presidency,” he stated.

Plang further maintained that President Tinubu’s second term bid remained secure, adding that many stakeholders within the APC were optimistic about the return of Vice President Kashim Shettima and other top party leaders.

Addressing arguments that President Tinubu should personally campaign across the country, the lawmaker said such expectations ignored the realities of political mobilisation in a large democracy like Nigeria.

He explained that presidential campaigns traditionally rely on party structures operating from the national level down to local governments, wards and polling units.

“You cannot expect a presidential candidate to visit every polling unit in Nigeria. Campaigns are built on representation. What matters is that the message reaches the people through established structures,” Plang added.
