Rivers ADC Challenges Wike Over Alleged Threat to Amaechi Campaign

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has condemned remarks attributed to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike about its vice presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, insisting that no political figure can determine whether an opposition candidate campaigns in the state.

The dispute followed reports that Wike warned Amaechi against attacking President Bola Tinubu and suggested that the former Rivers governor could encounter resistance if he attempted to campaign in the state. The minister was also reported to have raised questions about funds allegedly mismanaged during Amaechi’s public service career.

In a statement issued by publicity secretary Chizy Eneyi, the Rivers ADC described the reported remarks as troubling and urged political leaders to concentrate on policies and governance instead of personal confrontation.

Eneyi argued that the right to peaceful political participation could not depend on approval from a serving minister or any other individual. The party called on security agencies to ensure that candidates and supporters of all parties could assemble and campaign without intimidation.

Responding to the financial allegations, the ADC challenged Wike to submit any credible evidence to the appropriate investigative bodies rather than using public exchanges as a substitute for due process. The allegations have not been established in the material provided, and Amaechi’s response to them was not included.

The party questioned the timing of the accusations, noting that Wike had previously governed Rivers State for eight years. It said concerns about alleged misconduct should be handled through lawful investigation and, where warranted, prosecution.

The ADC also urged the FCT minister to give greater attention to the responsibilities of his office and allow the electoral contest to proceed under constitutional safeguards.

Reaffirming its intention to campaign in Rivers, the party said voters, rather than political officeholders, must determine who earns their support in the 2027 election.
