The Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has deployed 3,000 personnel across Abuja as security agencies strengthen preparations for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu ordered the deployment as part of measures to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure before, during and after the celebrations.
Personnel are being positioned at strategic locations including shopping malls, markets, motor parks, recreational centers and other areas expected to attract large numbers of people.
Critical National Assets and Infrastructure across the Federal Capital Territory will also receive additional protection.
Specialized formations participating in the operation include the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Counter Terrorism Unit and the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Unit.
Undercover personnel have also been activated for intelligence gathering and covert surveillance.
The command said attention would be paid to uncompleted buildings and locations identified as potential criminal hideouts or security black spots.
Area Commanders and Divisional Officers have been instructed to maintain a visible operational presence within their jurisdictions throughout the celebration period.
Odumosu warned personnel against complacency and directed commanders to ensure strict compliance with operational instructions.
The deployment forms part of wider security preparations ahead of the October 1 Independence Day celebrations.
