Nigeria, EU Strengthen Partnership on Democracy, Security and Migration

Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in key areas including democracy, security, migration management and sustainable development.

This was the outcome of a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, according to a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Oluwafemi Adeniyi.

The discussions focused on preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, political and security developments across West Africa, as well as plans for future high-level engagements between Nigeria and the European Union.

On the forthcoming elections, both parties underscored the importance of conducting inclusive, peaceful and credible polls as a cornerstone for democratic stability and good governance.

Ambassador Mignot disclosed that the European Union would deploy an expert mission for the 2027 elections instead of a conventional election observation mission. He added that the EU would continue to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the media, civil society organisations and political parties to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic processes.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing collaboration on migration management, efforts to combat human trafficking and discussions surrounding the formalisation of a readmission agreement between Nigeria and the EU.

Beyond governance and migration, both sides explored opportunities for enhanced cooperation in clean energy, climate action and other sustainable development initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth and environmental resilience.

Nigeria and the European Union further reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and agreed to sustain regular diplomatic consultations to advance shared interests and address emerging regional and global challenges.

The engagement reflects the growing strategic partnership between Nigeria and the EU, with both sides seeking closer collaboration on political, economic and security issues critical to regional stability and development.
