First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for continued efforts to strengthen democracy and ensure that the rights, dignity and freedoms of all Nigerians are respected and protected.
The First Lady made the call in a message commemorating the 2026 International Day of Democracy, observed on September 15, with the theme, “Bring Human Rights into Focus.”
According to her, the theme serves as a reminder that democracy can only thrive when the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens are upheld.
She noted that Nigeria, 65 years after independence and more than 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, had recorded significant progress in its democratic journey.
Tinubu highlighted stronger institutions, peaceful transitions of power and increased citizen participation in governance as some of the gains recorded under the democratic system.
She, however, urged Nigerians to collectively sustain efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s democratic institutions and ensuring that governance remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of citizens.
“Let us collectively continue to work together to strengthen our democracy, ensure that it serves the interests of all Nigerians, and build a more peaceful and prosperous nation,” she said.
The First Lady also extended her greetings to Nigerians as the country joined the global community in marking the International Day of Democracy 2026.
