The European Union is supporting preparations for a nationwide citizen led election observation exercise ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election under its Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria programme.
The initiative is intended to strengthen domestic monitoring of the electoral process and give citizens greater capacity to assess election preparations, voting, collation and results management.
A central component is the Election Observation Hub.
The platform has already been used during three off cycle elections and is expected to operate on a national scale for the 2027 polls.
It will support coordination, information sharing and analysis among domestic observer groups.
One EU supported initiative plans to deploy more than 3,000 election observers and 774 long term observers across Nigeria’s local government areas.
Preparations have included national training for state focal persons and trainers.
The programme covers the Watching The Vote Parallel Vote Tabulation methodology, pre election observation and observer recruitment.
Yiaga Africa Executive Director Samson Itodo said the training was intended to build a national network capable of deploying observers across all 36 states.
More than 130 training sessions are planned before the election.
Long term observers will monitor political developments, party campaigns, voter education, preparations by the Independent National Electoral Commission and incidents of electoral violence.
The organisers said the objective was to monitor the full electoral cycle rather than focus only on voting day.
Yiaga Africa Programme Director Cynthia Mbamalu said the violence monitoring component would also function as an early warning system.
Observers are expected to track incidents at local government level and share relevant findings with security agencies.
The initiative will also focus on transparency in the movement and verification of election results.
Organisers said citizens and the media needed to understand how results moved from polling units through successive collation stages.
The programme is designed to strengthen accountability by increasing independent domestic scrutiny of the electoral process.
Its effectiveness will depend on observer access, training quality, data integrity and the willingness of electoral and security institutions to engage constructively with credible findings.
