The Social Democratic Party says it intends to expand the role of women in party leadership, appointments, elections and decision making as its female leaders begin a nationwide mobilisation drive.
The commitment was made during a strategic meeting between national and state women leaders in Abuja.
SDP National Chairman Sadiq Gombe, represented by South South Deputy National Chairman Ugochukwu Uba, said the party was undergoing reforms intended to strengthen its political structures.
He said women would receive greater inclusion in party administration and electoral opportunities.
The party’s forthcoming manifesto is also expected to include policies aimed at increasing women’s participation in politics and public life.
Gombe described the SDP as an ideological party focused on social welfare and constitutional principles.
He urged women leaders to intensify grassroots mobilization ahead of future elections.
National Speaker of the SDP Women Parliament Sa’adatu Abdullahi said women needed stronger structures at state, local government, ward and community levels.
She argued that political participation required organization, strategy, sacrifice and sustained engagement rather than aspiration alone.
Abdullahi said the meeting was intended to assess weaknesses in the party’s women structures and develop a practical strategy for expansion.
She urged state leaders to regard themselves as important pillars of the party’s political organization.
The women’s leadership also called for greater unity and fewer internal divisions.
Abdullahi said stronger organization would increase women’s influence within the SDP and the wider political system.
The meeting forms part of the party’s attempt to build grassroots structures ahead of coming electoral contests.
The practical test of the SDP’s pledge will be the number of women ultimately nominated for competitive offices and appointed to influential party positions.
