ADC and NDC Say Consultations, Not Funding Problems, Delayed Campaign Council Announcements

The African Democratic Congress and Nigeria Democratic Congress say they have not yet announced their presidential campaign councils because consultations are continuing over the composition of the structures.

The two opposition parties rejected claims that financial difficulties were responsible for the delay.

ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the party was consulting stakeholders before making an announcement.

He also said the Independent National Electoral Commission had not imposed a deadline for parties to constitute campaign councils.

Abdullahi argued that the presidential election remained several months away and the party would announce its structure when ready.

NDC National Publicity Secretary Osa Director gave a similar explanation.

He said the party was under no obligation to match the timetable followed by the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Director also rejected suggestions that the NDC campaign faced a funding crisis.

He said the party would complete consultations with relevant stakeholders before unveiling its campaign team.

The comments come after the APC released a large campaign council headed by President Bola Tinubu.

Opposition parties have criticized some appointments in that structure while continuing to develop their own campaign organizations.

The eventual composition of the ADC and NDC councils will provide further indication of how the two parties intend to balance regional, political and organizational interests ahead of the 2027 election.
