Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has been named recipient of the 2026 Global Transformation and Good Governance Prize by the Millennium Excellence Award USA.
The Millennium Excellence Foundation said the award followed a selection process examining what it described as the developmental trajectory and achievements of Lagos State under the governor.
The award will be presented in Washington DC on August 29, 2026.
The ceremony is being held under the royal patronage of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The monarch and Queen Consort Lady Julia are expected to participate in the presentation.
The Millennium Excellence Awards recognize individuals of African heritage and other global contributors in areas including business, science, arts, philanthropy and public service.
Sanwo Olu is also expected to deliver a keynote address positioning Lagos to diaspora investors.
His presentation will focus on urban infrastructure, finance and investment ready projects in the state.
The governor is also scheduled to participate in plenaries and roundtable discussions aimed at strengthening economic and social links between Lagos and diaspora communities.
The award organizers listed previous honorees including Desmond Tutu, Kofi Annan, Mo Ibrahim, Wole Soyinka, Cyril Ramaphosa, Aliko Dangote, Tony Elumelu and John Dramani Mahama.
The Lagos government is expected to use the event partly as an investment promotion platform.
The significance of the award remains based on the assessment of the awarding organization.
