Adeleke and New Osun Police Commissioner Agree on Peace and Reconciliation Agenda

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and newly appointed Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Zungura have opened discussions on rebuilding public trust and restoring calm after a tense election period.

Zungura visited the governor with senior police officers after assuming office.

He promised impartial law enforcement and said the command would work with the state government to strengthen peace and stability.

Adeleke said Osun had passed through a difficult political period and argued that post election peace had not yet been fully restored.

The governor referred to a recent police operation in Ikire in which two people were reportedly killed and called for disciplinary action against the local Divisional Police Officer.

The circumstances of the incident and the governor’s allegation against the officer were not independently established in the source material.

Adeleke presented five broad requests to the new police leadership.

He asked the command to rebuild public trust, strengthen cooperation with the state government, review internal operational units, participate consistently in State Security Council meetings and examine the cases of Accord members he described as political detainees.

The governor said he wanted policing to be fair rather than favorable to his administration.

He also alleged that some police units had become associated in the public mind with partisan political interests.

That claim represents the governor’s assessment and would require independent investigation.

Adeleke said the government was pursuing post election reconciliation and had extended an olive branch to opposition stakeholders.

Zungura said he intended to address outstanding issues and restore confidence in the command.

The meeting sets an early test for the new commissioner as he attempts to manage political tensions while maintaining institutional neutrality.

Both sides said peace, rule of law and public confidence should guide the relationship between the police and the state government.
