Umeh Seeks Emergency Intervention as Erosion Threatens Obosi and Ogidi

Senator Victor Umeh has called for urgent federal and state intervention as severe erosion and flooding threaten communities in Obosi and Ogidi in Anambra State.

Umeh, who represents Anambra Central, made the appeal after inspecting affected locations in Idemili North Local Government Area.

He said the scale of the ecological damage had become too large for the Anambra State Government to handle alone.

The senator called for the Idemili Basin to be treated as an environmental disaster zone and urged broader consideration of a state of emergency on ecological challenges across Anambra.

At Ugamuma in Obosi, erosion has damaged farmland and roads and placed several houses at risk.

Some residents have reportedly abandoned their homes because of fears that the widening gully could cause further collapse.

A major road in the area has also been cut off, disrupting movement between neighbouring communities.

In Ogidi, flooding recently affected the palace of traditional ruler Alex Onyido.

Umeh said he would raise the issue with the Senate Committee on Environment and engage the Federal Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies.

He also promised to bring the matter before the Senate after the current recess.

The senator said repeated erosion was gradually consuming Anambra’s limited land area and required coordinated action involving federal agencies, the state government and the legislature.

Residents who met the senator during the inspection appealed for urgent intervention before more homes and infrastructure were lost.
