Nigeria Democratic Congress vice presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has criticised remarks by Islamic cleric Sani Yahaya Jingir supporting another Muslim presidential ticket with a Muslim running mate in 2027.
Kwankwaso described the comments as divisive and said political and religious leaders should promote national unity rather than deepen religious differences.
He said residents of Kano should not be portrayed as supporting rhetoric capable of polarising the country.
Kwankwaso also argued that the 2027 election should be used to assess the performance of the current administration.
Jingir, however, said he stood by his position and maintained that he was entitled to support candidates of his choice.
The cleric said his preference reflected his interpretation of political representation and historical experiences involving Muslims in parts of the country.
Separately, the South East chapter of the Kwankwaso National Network called on President Bola Tinubu to engage Catholic bishops constructively rather than allow supporters to attack them over public criticism of government.
The group said religious leaders had a legitimate role in speaking about hardship, unemployment, insecurity and governance.
It argued that disagreement with the bishops should be addressed through dialogue, clarification and policy responses.
The controversy reflects the growing sensitivity around religion and political messaging as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general election.
