Nigeria has recorded 1,000 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and 237 deaths in 2026, according to an update from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.
The agency reported that confirmed infections had been recorded across 23 states.
The case fatality rate was put at about 23.7 per cent, higher than the rate recorded during the corresponding period of 2025.
Most confirmed cases were concentrated in Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Benue and Edo states.
The NCDC said those five states accounted for about 86 per cent of confirmed infections.
The weekly number of newly confirmed cases declined from 25 in one reporting week to 20 in the next.
New infections during the period were reported in Ondo, Bauchi and Edo.
The most affected age group was identified as people between 21 and 30 years.
The agency also reported that no new healthcare worker infection was recorded during the referenced reporting week.
The figures show that Lassa fever continues to pose a serious public health challenge despite fluctuations in weekly case numbers.
