President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, granting pay increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent as part of efforts to enhance troop welfare and strengthen national security.
The new salary package, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the country.
Under the approved structure, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while lower-ranked personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The salary review is expected to raise the annual wage bill for the Armed Forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
President Tinubu said the decision reflects his administration’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices and dedication of military personnel in combating banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of military personnel while continuing to modernise the Armed Forces through the provision of advanced weapons and technological equipment needed for effective operations.
According to the President, security remains a critical pillar of national development, stressing that no nation can achieve lasting greatness without a safe and secure environment.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he stated.
President Tinubu also urged members of the Armed Forces to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their service and commitment to defending the nation’s territorial integrity.
He expressed confidence that, with the continued support of security personnel, Nigeria would overcome the challenges posed by criminal elements threatening the country’s peace and stability.
