Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on governments, healthcare professionals, communities and families to strengthen efforts toward promoting and supporting breastfeeding as a vital foundation for children’s health and national development.
In a message commemorating the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, observed from August 1 to 7, the First Lady urged the global community to remain committed to advancing healthy breastfeeding practices.
This year’s celebration is themed “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
Mrs Tinubu described breastfeeding as one of the most effective ways to ensure a child’s healthy growth and lifelong development, noting that it is a critical investment in the well-being of families and the future of the nation.
She also encouraged nursing mothers to adopt healthy lifestyles and maintain nutritious diets to support their own health and provide the best nourishment for their babies.
The First Lady reaffirmed her support for initiatives that promote maternal and child health, stressing the importance of creating an enabling environment that allows mothers to breastfeed successfully and give every child a healthy start in life.
