The ECOWAS Parliament has called for stronger policy support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), urging member states to eliminate cross-border trade barriers and harmonise business regulations to boost regional economic integration.
The regional legislature stressed the need for uniform customs procedures, import regulations, taxation policies and business registration requirements across West Africa to create a more predictable and business-friendly environment for MSMEs.
According to the Parliament, inconsistent trade policies and administrative bottlenecks continue to hinder the growth and competitiveness of small businesses, limiting their ability to take advantage of opportunities within the ECOWAS single market.
It noted that harmonising regulatory frameworks would reduce the cost of doing business, facilitate the free movement of goods and services, and encourage greater investment in the region’s MSME sector.
The Parliament also underscored the critical role of MSMEs in driving economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction, urging governments to strengthen policies that improve access to finance, markets, technology and capacity-building for entrepreneurs.
The lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to promoting regional integration through initiatives that enhance intra-African trade and create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive across ECOWAS member states.
