Long before the first housemate steps into the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) house, months of planning, design, and construction are already underway to bring one of Africa’s most watched reality television shows to life.
Behind the glamour and entertainment is a massive production effort that employs more than 1,000 Nigerians each season, with artisans, engineers, designers, and technical experts working together to transform an empty structure into the iconic BBNaija house.
Preparations for the 2026 edition began in November 2025, nearly nine months before the show’s July 26 premiere. The project starts with concept development, architectural planning, procurement, and logistics before construction teams begin the physical transformation, which is completed in about two months.
The purpose-built Lagos facility is equipped with advanced broadcast technology designed to capture every moment of the reality show. The house features 52 robotic pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras, seven handheld cameras, 59 microphones, 36 antenna blades, and 19 speakers, ensuring continuous coverage of housemates throughout the competition.
Located beside the live television studio, the house is designed to accommodate more than 20 contestants while allowing production crews to monitor activities around the clock.
Each season also introduces significant design changes aimed at improving both the viewing experience and the dynamics among housemates. One of the most notable redesigns came in 2024, when producers relocated the staircase to the centre of the living room and moved the bedrooms upstairs, creating new interaction patterns and enhancing camera coverage.
According to the production team, these changes are carefully planned to optimize sightlines, movement, and storytelling rather than simply refreshing the aesthetics of the house.
A defining feature of the BBNaija production is its reliance on Nigerian expertise. Every aspect of the project—from civil engineering and electrical installations to interior decoration and finishing—is executed locally.
The initiative provides employment opportunities for carpenters, electricians, decorators, civil engineers, and numerous other skilled professionals, contributing significantly to the country’s creative and construction sectors.
Beyond construction, the production sustains hundreds of additional jobs during the show’s run. Camera operators, production crews, master control room (MCR) personnel, technical support teams, housekeeping staff, caterers, and the show’s famous ninjas all play essential roles in ensuring the programme runs seamlessly throughout the season.
While BBNaija is widely known for its entertainment, drama, and competition, the annual rebuilding of the house highlights the scale of Nigeria’s growing television production industry and the local talent powering one of Africa’s biggest reality TV franchises.
