Delta Governor Rewards Student 20 Million Naira for Winning World Spelling Bee

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has awarded 20 million naira to student Great Chinedu Okediashi for winning the World Spelling Bee Championship in China, describing the achievement as proof of the state’s sustained investment in education.

Receiving the championship trophy at Government House in Asaba, Oborevwori said the victory shows that the state’s investment in education is producing results, noting that Delta State also produced members of the Nigerian team that won the World Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, the previous year. He said education remains a lasting asset that cannot be taken away, unlike material wealth, and praised the student’s school, Madonna International School, pledging additional state government support for the institution alongside the cash award for the student.

Commissioner for Secondary Education Kingsley Ashibuogwu described the victory as historic not only for Delta State but for Nigeria and the African continent, crediting the governor’s consistent financial and moral support for helping the team persevere to the global title. Receiving the reward, Okediashi thanked the governor and pledged to continue working to bring further international recognition to Delta State and Nigeria.
