Education stakeholders have urged Nigerian students to report cases of bullying rather than stay silent, warning that failure to do so fuels a culture that undermines learning and mental health.
At a sensitization workshop in Abuja organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Commission on the National Policy on Anti Bullying, UBEC Executive Secretary Aisha Garba said students who witness bullying should not treat it as someone else’s problem, encouraging them to report incidents confidentially to teachers or school heads. She said bullying takes physical, verbal, social and digital forms and can cause lasting psychological and academic harm, with many victims staying silent out of fear of retaliation.
Garba said the national policy provides practical guidance for preventing and addressing bullying from primary school through university, and urged teachers to create safe reporting environments while calling on parents to reinforce moral values at home, expressing concern that negative social media influences are contributing to the erosion of societal values among young people.
