At least two people have died during massive celebrations in Mexico City following Mexico’s victory over Ecuador to reach the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.
According to the Mexico City government, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from asphyxiation during the celebrations on Wednesday.
Local media also reported the death of a third person, but authorities said they had yet to confirm the claim.
The celebrations erupted after Mexico defeated Ecuador to secure their first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986, advancing to the Round of 16 in front of jubilant home supporters.
City officials estimated that more than one million people poured into the streets of the capital, with large crowds gathering around the iconic Angel of Independence monument to celebrate the historic achievement.
Authorities have not released further details on the circumstances surrounding the fatalities as investigations continue.
