Alexx Ekubo Laid to Rest in Abia as Nollywood Stars, Dignitaries Pay Final Respects

Popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has been laid to rest in his hometown of Aziukwubwo Ujori Village, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, following an emotional farewell attended by family, friends, colleagues, and admirers.

Ekubo, who passed away on May 11 at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with Stage 4 kidney cancer, was honoured through a series of ceremonies that drew mourners from across Nigeria’s entertainment, business, and political communities.

The funeral activities commenced on June 10 with a Service of Songs at The Monarch Event Center in Lekki, Lagos. The event brought together fellow actors, friends, and dignitaries, many dressed in white, to celebrate the life, achievements, and enduring legacy of the late actor.

On Wednesday, his remains arrived at the family compound in Abia State in a solemn procession. Relatives, friends, and members of the community gathered for a wake, sharing fond memories and reflecting on the impact Ekubo made both on and off the screen.

In keeping with local customs, younger members of the family escorted his remains into the compound while carrying a portrait of the deceased actor, a symbolic gesture reflecting the deep respect and affection he commanded within the community.

The final burial rites were held on Thursday, attracting several Nollywood stars and notable personalities who came to pay their last respects. Among those present were Nancy Isime, Stan Nze, IK Ogbonna, Bimbo Ademoye, Deyemi Okanlawon, Omoni Oboli, and comedian Ayo Makun (AY).

Also in attendance were Caleb Ajagba, Chief of Staff to the Abia State Governor; businessman Obi Cubana; and the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Matthew Ekwuribe.

One of the most heartfelt tributes came from actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli, who confirmed the actor’s burial and announced a special initiative to support his family.

In a message shared on Instagram, Oboli revealed that proceeds from her upcoming movie, The First Lady, scheduled for release on her YouTube channel, would be donated to Ekubo’s family.

“We’ve laid our bestie Alex to rest to the glory of God. Thank you, Jesus!” she wrote.

“In his memory and to honour his legacy, I am releasing our movie The First Lady on Omoni Oboli TV on YouTube. The proceeds will go to the family, so please help us share widely.”

She concluded her tribute with an emotional farewell: “Alexx Ekubo! You came, you saw, you conquered! You are forever in our hearts. Love you forever.”

The late actor is remembered for his contributions to Nollywood, his charismatic screen presence, and the lasting impact he made on colleagues, fans, and the wider entertainment industry.
