Sanwo-Olu Orders Massive Waste Evacuation as Lagos Moves to Clear Refuse Backlogs

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation across the state following a recent build-up of refuse in parts of the metropolis.

The governor said relevant agencies, including the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of the Environment, have been mobilised to intensify cleanup operations.

According to him, additional trucks and personnel have been deployed to affected areas to clear existing backlogs, with assurances that visible progress is already being recorded across several neighbourhoods.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the state government remains committed to restoring cleanliness across Lagos, stressing that the ongoing operation would continue until all affected locations are fully cleared.

He explained that Lagos generates over 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, describing waste management in the state as a continuous and demanding responsibility that requires sustained coordination and public cooperation.

“As we continue this cleanup, I ask for your partnership. Please bag your waste properly and avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels or on the roads,” the governor said.

He urged residents to support government efforts by adhering to proper waste disposal practices, warning that indiscriminate dumping contributes to flooding and environmental degradation.

Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean and safe city, adding that authorities are fully engaged in addressing the current waste management challenges.

“We are fully on top of this situation. Let us work together to keep Lagos clean and safe for everyone,” he said.
