Peter Obi Donates N10m to Fire-Ravaged School, Demands Government Action on Insecurity

Presidential aspirant Peter Obi has donated ten million naira toward the rebuilding of a school in Anambra State that sustained fire damage in December 2024, using the occasion to call for decisive government action against the insecurity threatening educational institutions across Nigeria.

Obi visited Practicing Nursery and Primary School in Agulu to fulfil a commitment he had made during an earlier visit, presenting a cheque as initial funding for reconstruction of the damaged school block. He said he considered the quality of education a direct determinant of a country’s level of development, and that protecting children’s access to safe and functional learning environments was a responsibility that extended beyond individual philanthropy.

Asked about the broader crisis of school insecurity following the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State and the killing of one of the teachers, Obi said the response depended entirely on the decisiveness and will power of the government in office. He said his own experience as governor of Anambra State had demonstrated that determined leadership could produce meaningful security outcomes when those in government committed fully to the task.

He said the country needed to secure not just schools but the entire society, and that this required political will rather than statements. He expressed confidence that firm action by a committed administration could defeat the forces responsible for attacks on schools and communities.
