Desmond Elliot Says He Signed Obasa Impeachment Move Believing It Had Presidency’s Backing

Lawmaker and actor Desmond Elliot has revealed that he initially supported the impeachment move against Mudashiru Obasa because he believed it had the backing of the presidency.

Elliot made the disclosure while recounting events surrounding the political developments involving the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

According to him, he was in South Africa attending a wedding when discussions about Obasa’s impeachment began.

“I was in South Africa for a wedding when the impeachment of Obasa commenced. I was confused when I returned,” Elliot said.

The lawmaker explained that upon his return, he noticed several of his colleagues signing documents related to the impeachment process and subsequently added his signature, believing the move had presidential approval.

“I saw my colleagues signing and I signed too, thinking the order was from the presidency,” he stated.

Elliot, however, disclosed that the situation later changed after President Bola Tinubu allegedly intervened and directed lawmakers to restore Obasa as Speaker.

“Until the president called us to return the speaker, which we did,” he added.

The comments have sparked fresh discussions around the political dynamics within the Lagos Assembly and the alleged influence of national political leadership in state legislative affairs.
