Manchester City kept the pressure on league leaders Arsenal in the Premier League title race after securing a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Liverpool were left frustrated after a 1-1 draw against struggling Chelsea at Anfield, with home supporters booing the team at full time.
With only three matches remaining in the season, City moved to within two points of Arsenal, who are set to face relegation-threatened West Ham United on Sunday.
Following their dramatic 3-3 draw against Everton earlier in the week, Pep Guardiola’s side needed a win to maintain their hopes of securing a seventh league title in nine seasons.
Brentford frustrated the defending champions for much of the contest before Belgian winger Jeremy Doku broke the deadlock just after the hour mark with a curling strike into the top corner.
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland doubled City’s advantage with a clever backheel finish, extending his lead in the Premier League Golden Boot race over Brentford’s Igor Thiago.
Haaland later provided the assist for Omar Marmoush, who sealed the victory with a late third goal in stoppage time.
Speaking after the match, City manager Pep Guardiola admitted the title race was still out of his team’s control.
“We will see, it is not in our hands. We will do our job and wait,” Guardiola said.
The victory also narrowed the goal difference gap between City and Arsenal to just one.
Arsenal still have fixtures against already relegated Burnley and Crystal Palace, with a UEFA Conference League final also looming.
City, meanwhile, will host Crystal Palace before travelling to face in-form Bournemouth and concluding the campaign at home against Aston Villa.
At Anfield, Liverpool’s hopes of finishing strongly suffered another setback after being held by Chelsea, with frustrated fans voicing their displeasure at the final whistle.
