A faction of the Obidient Movement has announced the expulsion of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and prominent campaign figure Yunusa Tanko from the group, citing what it described as a deviation from the movement’s founding ideals.
The faction, which claims to be the original founders of the Obidient Movement, also declared the dissolution of leadership structures established after the 2023 general elections and unveiled plans for a rebranding ahead of the 2027 polls.
Speaking on behalf of the group, its International Coordinator, Dr. Barry Avotu Johnson, said the decision followed concerns that the movement’s original vision had allegedly been “hijacked” after the 2023 presidential election.
Johnson maintained that the faction was determined to restore what it described as the core principles upon which the movement was founded, adding that a restructuring process would soon commence.
“We no longer want Obi,” the faction reportedly stated, insisting that the movement must return to its original mission and leadership direction.
The Obidient Movement gained national prominence during the 2023 elections as a grassroots support base for Peter Obi’s presidential ambition, attracting large numbers of young Nigerians and first-time voters through social media-driven mobilisation and political advocacy.
However, the latest development signals deepening divisions within the movement as political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to take shape.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Peter Obi nor Yunusa Tanko had officially responded to the claims made by the faction.
