Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.
Mohammed announced his defection on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting attended by party loyalists, political allies, and key figures across the state. His decision comes amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Addressing the gathering, the governor said the move was driven by what he described as the need to pursue a clearer political vision and strengthen grassroots engagement. He noted that the APM platform offers an opportunity to consolidate his administration’s development agenda and expand political inclusion in Bauchi State.
The defection is expected to trigger a wave of reactions within the PDP, where Mohammed has been a prominent figure, as well as among opposition parties positioning for influence in the North-East region.
Political observers say the move could reshape alliances in Bauchi and beyond, particularly as parties intensify preparations for upcoming elections. Supporters of the governor at the meeting pledged their loyalty and readiness to mobilise for the APM, signalling potential shifts in the state’s political structure.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership has yet to issue an official response to Mohammed’s resignation.
