NDLEA and Customs Launch Coordinated Offensive Against Drug Networks

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Nigeria Customs Service have formalised a strategic institutional partnership to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating across Nigeria’s land, sea, and air entry points, committing both agencies to coordinated enforcement operations, structured intelligence sharing, and the elimination of operational overlaps that criminal networks had historically exploited.

The agreement was reached at a high-level meeting at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja, where agency chairman Buba Marwa and Customs Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi signed a joint communiqué in the presence of senior officials from both institutions.

Both leaders acknowledged the growing sophistication of transnational organised crime networks and emphasised that a coordinated institutional response was now essential to disrupting illicit supply chains that had evolved well beyond the capacity of any single agency acting independently.

Under the new framework, both agencies will share intelligence through a secure structured platform for early detection and prevention of criminal activity, deploy joint task forces at seaports, airports, and land borders, and clearly define operational roles to eliminate jurisdictional friction. A Standing Inter-Agency Committee will also be established to resolve disputes promptly and ensure consistent day-to-day coordination.Marwa and Adeniyi emphasised that the partnership would create a significantly more formidable barrier against illicit substances entering and leaving Nigeria while simultaneously protecting the efficiency of legitimate trade operations, which they described as an equally critical national interest that enforcement activities must support rather than undermine.
