The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over comments made during an opposition parties’ summit in Ibadan, describing them as “reckless” and potentially harmful to national stability.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party accused the governor of invoking historical references linked to political violence, including the infamous Operation Wetie, in a manner it said could incite unrest.
The APC said it found the remarks particularly troubling given Makinde’s position as a sitting governor, noting that public office holders have a responsibility to promote peace and stability.
According to the party, the governor’s comments go beyond normal political discourse and risk escalating tensions, urging security and intelligence agencies to take the development seriously in order to safeguard lives and property.
The statement also dismissed claims by opposition figures suggesting that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party system, insisting that the country’s democratic space remains vibrant, with multiple political parties actively participating in the electoral process.
The APC further criticised opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attributing their challenges to internal divisions, leadership disputes, and lack of cohesion.
It argued that the opposition had failed to present a clear alternative vision for national development, accusing its leaders of focusing on what it described as “alarmist narratives” rather than policy-based engagement.
Reaffirming its position, the ruling party said it remains committed to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and delivering on the administration’s governance agenda under Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The APC added that it would continue preparations for the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence in the support of Nigerians.
Governor Makinde has yet to officially respond to the APC’s statement.
