Tinubu, Jonathan Hold Closed-Door Meeting at State House

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday received former President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House in Abuja, in what observers describe as part of ongoing high-level consultations on regional and continental affairs.

The meeting, which took place at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa around 4 p.m., was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared photographs of the encounter on his X account.

Images from the meeting showed both leaders engaged in what appeared to be a relaxed discussion inside the President’s office, with no official details released on the agenda.

Wednesday’s visit continues a pattern of periodic engagements between Tinubu and Jonathan, often linked to political developments in West Africa and Nigeria’s broader diplomatic interests on the continent.

Jonathan’s last visit to the Villa was in November 2025, shortly after he was evacuated from Guinea-Bissau following a political crisis that disrupted the country’s presidential election process. At the time, he had been leading an election observation mission under the West African Elders Forum.

During that visit, the former president briefed Tinubu on the situation in Guinea-Bissau and called for the release of detained opposition figures, as well as the announcement of election results. He also cautioned against the use of force in resolving political disputes in the region.

Jonathan has remained actively involved in conflict resolution and election monitoring across West Africa in recent years, serving in various mediation roles in countries including Mali, The Gambia, Liberia, and Guinea-Bissau.

Although the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting was not disclosed, it is widely seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional stability and cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
