2027 Politics Must Be Guided by Maturity, Tolerance — Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged political leaders and citizens across Nigeria to approach the 2027 election season with maturity, tolerance and a strong sense of national responsibility.

The Vice President warned against divisive rhetoric and actions capable of threatening the country’s peace and stability as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.

Shettima made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking with journalists shortly after observing the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the Ramat Square Eid Ground in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

He assured Nigerians that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside state governments, is implementing measures aimed at easing the economic hardship facing citizens.

“Governments at all levels are poised to ameliorate the sufferings of the Nigerian people,” the Vice President said.

Shettima appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and continue supporting the government as it works to stabilise the economy, improve national security and create opportunities for citizens.

“As we enter the political phase, there is a need for maturity, forbearance and generosity of spirit in our political interactions. We must avoid inflammatory statements and actions capable of overheating the polity because what binds us together as Nigerians supersedes whatever divides us,” he stated.

The Vice President also called for sustained prayers for peace and stability across the country.

“Let there be peace in the land. Let us continue to pray for peace not only in Borno State but in every nook and cranny of Nigeria,” he added.

Shettima further referenced ongoing global tensions, particularly the crisis in the Middle East, as a reminder of the need for Nigerians to embrace unity and national solidarity.

Among those who joined the Vice President for the Eid prayers were the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Umar Usman Kadafur; the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari; members of the National Assembly; and other senior government officials.

Following the prayers, Kadafur paid a traditional Sallah homage to the Vice President at his Maiduguri residence, where he commended Shettima for his continued support to the government and people of Borno State.

“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, we are here to felicitate with Your Excellency on the occasion of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration,” the deputy governor said.

He also prayed for wisdom, strength and good health for the Vice President as he continues to support the Tinubu administration.
